Question: Hello
I have just done a blood test and a bit shocked to see the following result.. Could you please assist me in interpreting same.
1. Elisa herpes IgG: 1.28
2. Elisa herpes IgM: 0.07

Does this mean i have herpes?
I have never experience blisters near the mouth etc.. However for maybe 10 years... I do get a boil type on my bum... Various trip to dermatologist diagnosed folliculitis.
Please advise how serious this reading is...

Brief Answer:
Regarding hsv

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to ask a doctor service. I have gone through your query and noted your concern.

HSV type 1 most commonly causes cold sores around the mouth. The infection goes undiagnosed in most cases as if is subclinical. However, it may reactivate to cause cold sores in mouth area. Your report suggests that you have a old infection with type 1 HSV and most likely it went unnoticed.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if you need any more assistance.

Doctor.. Thank you very much for your reply. I am relieved. Can i take it that my report is stating just an old infection linked to hsv type 1 and not a genital herpes type 2?
Asking this because google seriously confused me.. Especially to break outs on my bum.
Ps i have been able load my result as image for your perusal
Kind regards to you.

I would also wish to know if with this result, i am restricted to a normal life.. Be it on a daily basis or on a sexual basis.
Thank you Doctor.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
This test doesn't distinguish between type 1 and type 2 hsv. You need to take the test for separate hsv types to know if its hsv 1 or 2. Asymptomatic hsv type 2 which causes genital herpes can be passed on to sexual partner therefore if you have it you would be advised to use a condom to curtail transmission. Asymotomatic hsv type 1 which causes cold sores is unlikely to transmit unless one has visible cold sores. Hsv 1 of long duration specially if silent is rarely passed on. The risk of transmission is only during a clinical episode of cold sores.

Hello doctor

I have just call the laboratory to request information on how i can distinguish between the hsv type 1 and 2 through this igg results and they said that the test is a combined one. In my case the test is herpes negative and hence does not mandate elaborate tests to distinguish... Are you of same opinion please?

Brief Answer:
Regarding hsv

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
The IgG index was in the positive range (1.28) according to reference range. So it suggests an old infection. Its not negative according to that. No doubt the test doesn't distinguish between type 1 and 2 HSV.

I am now very confused doctor... Laboratory says negative herpes... No need to differentiate between type 1 and 2...range says positive...

Perhaps can you give me an advice on low positive results?

I apologise for asking so many question.
Just came as a shock and as you know..
Many people tends to panick

All i want to know is if this result is so serious that i need to apply restrictions to my normal life... By saying old infection...can it be an infection not relates to herpes? Because i do not have changing partners and i really cannot figure out where i could catch a herpes infection... Even old. A doctor told me the result measures how the immune system reacts to an infection or virus.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
There is an obvious typing mistake in report. They have mentioned IgM index 1.28 whereas it should have been IgG in that row. If I ignore that then the index value is in positive range. You would be best adviced to repeat the test from another lab and see if it leads to some conclusion.
Take care
