default
Posted on Tue, 22 Mar 2016
Question: Hi,
I have mild breast fibrosis and I have heard that iodine and Vitamin E supplementation is a good choice to combat breast fibrosis. Which dose would you recommend me to take?

Doctor's advice was to avoid:
- All caffeine sources like coffee, tea and chocolate - Soy products
- Nuts

And he told me that he will check me again in 1 year

Brief Answer:
take treatment and precautions as advised

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear,
I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.
Fibrosis in breast are due to chronic changes which cause pain and discomfort in the breast, especially in the premenstrual period.
The symptoms are relieved by restricting caffeine, chocolate, tea and soft drinks from the diet.
Vitamin E and iodine supplements have not shown to be helpful and can be harmful if taken in large doses.
You can one capsule of vitamin E 400 mg daily along with iodised salt.
Hope you found the answer helpful.

I've read numerous studies such as this one http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/0000 which confirm the benefits of Iodine in treating fibrosis. Can you please explain why you think it's not effective ?

Brief Answer:
Iodine has adverse effects on thyroid gland

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear,
Sorry for the late reply.
Iodine have shown some improvement in fibrocystic disease, however the harmful effects of taking iodine is more than its beneficial effects.
It can cause adverse effects on the thyroid gland and decrease or completely stop its functioning leading to overt hypothyroidism.
I will suggest you to have dietary restrictions as advised and watch for the improvement.
If improvement do not occurs, then you can consult with your doctor the option of taking iodine, the type and dosing.
Hope you found the answer helpful.
Please do get back for further queries.
Wishing you good health.
