Does Certain Food Effect The Absorption Rate Of Adderall?

default
Posted on Mon, 5 Jan 2015
Question: Can certain foods/drinks effect the absorption of adderall. Can these foods/drinks based on their acidity or alkalinity level limit the effects of adderall. Also can food in general and when I choose to eat alter the effects of this medication? If so how can I find out what to eat/drink and how to time my meals or snacks around doses of adderall?

Brief Answer:
acidity or alkalinity can alter absorption of drug.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Welcome to HCM.
I have gone through your query.

There are effects of acidity and alkalinity of food on adderall absorption.

Adderall is potentiated by BASIC foods in the STOMACH with adderall. Good foods to alkalize are cucumbers, carrots, beets, tomatoes, beans, almonds, etc.

Acidic substances block the initial absorbstion of the stimulant. So don't take your Adderall with orange juice, coffee, or soda. Instead, take it with milk (which is basic) or water (which is neutral).

You can plan your diet and drug accordingly.

Else If you can please list your diet, what foods you eat in your day in the follow-up query, I can tell you or make diet chart for you.

Hope this helps.
Hope to hear from you soon.
Thanks.

I am pretty health conscious and try my best to eat both a variety of acidic and alkaline foods. Still I struggle choosing when and what to eat during the day because I do not want to lessen the effects of my adderall. Is it better to take the adderall on an empty stomach or a full one and how long after taking my adderall would it be best to have my next meal without decreasing the efficacy of the drug? If I where to create a daily adderall dosing/timing chart based around my meals throughout the day, how would it look? Once I know the ideal times to take my adderall doses how can I find out if a particular food is either acidic or alkaline so I can know if it will effect the benefits of the medication?
Thank you,
XXXX.

Brief Answer:
1-hour gap is advisable between drug and food.

Detailed Answer:
Dear,
Thanks for writing in here again.

I can make some recommendations for you to take adderall. But I must tell you that these are more clinical-experience based than copy-book guidelines.

-The same amount of drug gets into the blood whether taken on an empty or full stomach.

-So, If you are to involve in a work that requires high attention at a time, take the drug empty stomach. Keep a gap of at least 1 hour between drug and food. The drug will reach the peak concentration quickly (i.e. the drug will show immediate effects) but the effects wont last long.

-Otherwise, if you take it with food, the effects of drug will last longer but the peak concentration will be reached slowly (i.e. the onset of effects will be delayed).

-It is best to take the drug with water.

-Avoid citrous juices/fruits, sodas or caffeine, as they can interfere with absorption and increase elimination of the drug. These foods should be avoided at least one hour before or after adderall.

- In general, a time difference of at least 1 hour should be kept between drug and meals.

-Its better to take the adderall in morning. It can cause insomnia if taken later in the day.

I have listed some of the acidic and alkaline foods in my earlier reply.
Its better to consult a dietitian and nutritionist for a comprehensive list of acidic and alkaline foods.

Hope this helps you.
