Brief Answer:
Atrial septal defect will not cause heart attack

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I am Dr.Rajesh Teli,MD.
I have gone through your query. Thanks for using HCM.
Basically ASD is Hole in septum between 2 upper chambers of heart ,a defect present since birth .It leads burden of extra flow of blood to right heart chambers and then to lungs .It does not lead to heart attack.
However after age 40 ,irrespective of such defect ,depending upon presence of other risk factor one can have blocks in heart arteries and risk of heart attack.
So in your case before closing your defect surgically you will be subjected to angiography to look for any blocks .if you have significant blocks then it will be bypassed along with closure of defect .
My best wishes
Dr.Rajesh Teli,MD
