Does Nitrofurantoin Cause Severe Acidity?

default
Posted on Sat, 22 Aug 2015
Question: I am taking, nitrofurantoin mono/mac 100 mg. I have a high rate of acid that my natural body produces. Question 1, does this medication have any acid in it? I took 1 tablet last night with my dinner, and one tablet this morning with my breakfast. That was at 8:45 am. I went to work and about 10:am, I became very sick and regurgatated all of my breakfast. The whole vomit was very acidity. It is now going on 1:30 pm and my stomach is still unsettled. Omeprazole, 20 mg before dinner, Levothyroxine, 0.88 mg, Simvastatin 40 mg, Citalopram 40 mg, Buprpion 150 mg every other day. Vitamin and Loritin.

Brief Answer:
No the drug itself has no acid in it. Take it at the same time everyday.

Detailed Answer:
Dr. Hanif warmly Welcomes you!

Thanks for consulting at my virtual clinic. I have carefully worked through your case, and can realize your health worries. Being your physician, I will take care all of your medical concerns.

No Nitrofurantoin itself doesn't have any acid content in it. But you should have taken it with the dinner again as a second dose. You are on many medications which as a combined effect on stomach cause acidity and gastric discomfort too. It is better to take it with food. And I prefer you to add mucaine syrup too for acidity.

Have your physician done gastroscopy ever?
If not I highly recommend you to go for the gastroscopy for the cause of acidity and issue you have with you.

For urinary tract infection add Cranberry juice. It is best natural remedy and very effective too. Consult your treating physician if you have to continue Nitrofurantoin or not.

Have a wonderful time ahead. Hope I answered all of your questions. Let me know if you have any further clinical concerns. I will be happy to get back to you shortly. If satisfied here, please give a five star rating and don't forget to close the discussion.
