Does Ciprofloxacin Help In Treating Abdominal Pain And Bloating?

default
Posted on Fri, 10 Jun 2016
Question: I have been diagnosed with ulcerative proctitis (and slight left-sided colitis) since 2013. It's been in remission for a year and a half, but recently I experienced a flare up of abdominal pain and bloating (no diarrhea). My doctor put me on 1 week of Ciprofloxacin 500 mg twice a day. How does this work on the UC, especially if there is no diarrhea? I'm ending the course and don't feel that much better. Thanks.

Hi,
Thanks for posting your query.
I am Dr.R.K and I am pleased to assist you.

Flare up of ulcerative colitis includes symptoms like diarrhea, bleeding, abdominal pain, cramping etc.

You have abdominal pain and cramping and not the other symptoms. There are other causes of abdominal pain as well.

Which part of abdomen you have pain?
Any other medical illness you have?
When was the last colonoscopy done?

Regards,
Dr.R.K

Hi Dr. XXXXXXX

Thanks for your help. I was diagnosed in 2013 and September 2013 was my first (and only) colonoscopy so far.

The pain is all over the abdomen but more in the right side than the left. There is also a lot of bloating.

I had a flare-up in 2014 which had all the typical symptoms of UC. Went into remission and stayed all right since then, but every 5-6 months or so my stomach goes into this state where I have a lot of bloating, gas, abdominal pain, minimal diarrhea and sometimes constipation. My doctor uses Rifaximin for those times. THis time he used Ciproxin.

I have no other illnesses, apart from seasonal allergies.

Thanks.
