Question: My neurologist prescribed Aricept for Alzheimer's but as we know there is no cure. So what is in the drug to help other than to create side effects?

I have noted your clinical details. I agree with you that there is no cure for Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, Aricept (donepezil) slows the rate of progression of dementia in people with AD. The benefit is sustained for the first few years of illness. You should be closely watched for any benefits for about six months. If there is benefit, it should be continued for at least 2-3 years. If there is no benefit at six months, it can be stopped.
