Can Anantadine Has Any Side Effects?

My husband who has Lewy Body dementia was prescribed Anantadine for the first time. He was told to take 1 -100 mg tablet in the am and another at mid-day. He is taking 23 mg of Aricept and some other drugs as well. On Saturday afternoon, he developed a 101.5 fever and was very confused and disoriented and was incontinent. I gave him Two tylenol and his fever went down and he was back to normal in the morning. Again today, he took the same amount of Anantadine and the same thing happened . Could these events be related to the new drug?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Amantadine is used to treat Parkinson's disease and "Parkinson-like" symptoms such as stiffness and shaking that may be caused by the use of certain drugs.

It is most common side effects include blurred vision, nausea, loss of appetite, drowsiness, dizziness, lightheadedness, headache, dry mouth, constipation, or trouble sleeping.

It can also cause high fever, stiff muscles, confusion, sweating, fast or uneven heartbeats, rapid breathing, feeling like you might pass out.

Based on the history your husband seems to have some of the less common but serious adverse effects for which he should consult his treating doctor to prescribe an alternate effective but a safer drug for his Parkinson's symptoms or to adjust the dose of Amantadine.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
