Do Metformin And Metoprolol Cause Hair Loss?

default
Posted on Mon, 10 Nov 2014
Question: I'm 61, female, was borderline diabetic, hemoglobin(?) was 6.7, started working out, eating healthy, number now down to 6.1. I was put on linsinopril by one doctor, long time ago, but couldn't get my blood pressure down, so they sent me to another dr who put me on metformin and metorprol. I'm not one for medicine which is why i got back to working out. Anyways my hair started to shed, my stylist says it's internal as my scalp and hair are fine. Read up on the medication and found that two of them may cause the hair to shed. Dr. told me to stop all medicine, monitor blood pressure and come back in a month. I don't feel comfortable with that and want to find out what's causing my hair to shed, besides my age as it's not just thinning. Aren't there some kind of tests to be run?

Brief Answer:
You require evaluation for Hair loss

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for posting your query .
Greetings from Dr. Divakara. P

First of all it's very unlikely for Metformin and Metoprolol to cause Hair shedding . I advise you to continue taking these medicines .

There are other causes for Hair shedding like Thyroid Disorders , Malnutrition , SLE , Fungal Infections which needs to be evaluated . Also Iron deficiency is a cause for Hair shedding , your low hemoglobin also could be due to Iron deficiency .

So I advise you to get the following tests and revert back .

Serum Albumin , Serum TSH , Serum Iron and Ferritin , ANA.

Any clarifications feel free to ask .

Pleasure to answer .

Regards.
