Developed A Large, Dark Purple Bruise On Biceps. Should I Be Worried?

default

Question: My husband, a thirty year old healthy male, developed a large, dark purple bruise on his bicept. It is not painful and has no other symptoms. He does not recall injuring himself. The bruise is flesh colored in the center. Any reason to worry?

Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
Development of large purple bruises on the arm spontaneously without any history of injury is suggestive of a bleeding disorder. You need to consult your physician to get a complete blood coagulation profile checked with APTT and platelet count to rule out possible causes like thrombocytopenia, capillary fragility, etc.
This can also happen due to a viral infection in the recent past- decreases the synthesis of platelets from the bone marrow.
Presence of any autoimmune disorders also needs to be ruled out.
The treatment is based on the diagnosis and severity of the problem. Treatment is usually done by fluid infusion, steroids, immunoglobulins, blood transfusions, etc according to the severity of the condition.
This symptom is worrisome in case such bruises are recurrent in nature. Flesh color in the center of the bruise is suggestive of healing.
I hope this answers your query.
In case you have additional questions or doubts, you can forward them to me, and I shall be glad to help you out.
