Can Sleep Deprivation And Alcohol Consumption Cause Seizures?

default
Posted on Sat, 8 Aug 2015
Question: My daughter is 32 and had seizure onset at 18...seizures were not controlled with various meds until 4 years ago when a Dr at Harvard found a combination of three meds that stopped the seizures. She has been seizure free since then.

Occasionally my daughter will stay up until 2:30 am or so which scares me...she might sleep in until 10 am...it may be combined with a couple of glasses of wine....while she has not had a breakthrough seizure do I have reason for concern???

Brief Answer:
Sleep deprivation and alcohol use could cause seizures.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for using HCM.

I have read your question and understand your concerns.

Sleep deprivation and alcohol use are among risk factors for developing a seizure even under treatment, so your concerns seem legit, especially if these activities become more frequent.

However, a good thing is completion of sleep hours ( 8 hours of sleep are sufficient at this age ).

I assume your daughter knows this already, so overreacting on this matter could cause unnecessary stress.

There is need for explanation from time to time about these matters and understanding too.

Hope this helps. I remain at your disposal for further questions and clarifications.

Best regards.

Brief Answer:
Just normal sleep patterns.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome back.

As I mentioned before, 8 hours of sleep are sufficient at your doughter's age

Sleep is better not to be interrupted.

There are no specific patterns of sleeping, just normal sleeping time at evenings and sufficient hours.

Hope this helps. Best regards.
