Can Muscle Spasms Lead To Backache?

default
Posted on Mon, 31 Jul 2023
Question: I changed primary care physician and hospital in January with new insurance. I have many problems, and my physician is working to catch up with ordering pertinent test results from the other hospital's specialists. Meanwhile, he is dealing with my extreme back pain that started around Christmas, but seems to be under control at times with the introduction of the Chiropractor and increased Gabapentin. Unfortunately, I am saddened that I am still needing stronger pain medicine, but not so often. My hair seems to be falling out at an alarming rate. I don't know if it is related. I have recently been diagnosed with osteoperosis.

Brief Answer:

The vicious cycle of pain and spasm needs to be broken

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

Your back pain could be due to muscle spasm. Hot compress should provide relief. The vicious cycle of pain and spasm needs to be broken even if increased doses of Gabapentin needs to be used.

This should ease the problem and make it go away. If it does not spondylosis could be another cause to consider.

I would insist you to get an X-Ray of Lumbosacral spine (AP and lateral) done and to see a physical therapist with the reports.

Based on the findings he would be able to demonstrate to you proper exercises that should provide relief.

Gabapentin is known to be associated with hair loss.

Take vitamin D and calcium supplementation for osteoporosis. Vitamin D supplementation is very important. Your doctor could tell whether hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is needed as well.

Hope I have answered your query.

Take care
