Can Drug Test Results Be False Positive After Taking Zantac?

Question: Thank you, I am a single dad of a 15-year-old. My son has been through the rigors of trouble. He takes Celexia, Over the course of the past 7 weeks, the negative effects of what he has been through resulted in stomach pain. His pediatrician started him off on Zantac. After a few weeks the problems persisted and the Pediatrician moved to Nexium 20 mg. During the transition he took both Zantac and Nexium for a transitional 4 days. Still no relief.

Next, I took him to an adolescent GI who was very thorough. In order to rule out any bacteriological issues he instructed us to stop Zantac and Nexium and to wait 2 weeks and schedule with the lab a stool sample test and an unfamiliar breathalyzer test accompanied by a blood test. However, my boy fell into worse pain. I am sure you would understand that a parent can’t stand by and see his child suffer after having some moderate relief from the over the counter meds. While I know the rules, I used my instincts and I gave him one 40mg Pantoprazole. I understand that drugs of this nature are accumulative prior to maximum result. The next day I did one of my Pantoprazole 40 mg in the morning. The next day I gave him one pentazole in the morning and at night. The next day I called the adolescent GI who understood and condoned my actions and then called in Pantoprazole 40MG twice a day. Finally, relief has occurred with measurable results. We also created an appointment for early XXXXXXX to see the short-term results. Now the plot thickens!

Without details, please accept that as a responsible parent and an impending case about to heard along with addictive behaviors and signs of sociopathic actions (Narcissism, lying, recklessness and anger issues) he needed Residential Drug treatment, I thought.

Upon the assessment at the residential treatment facility, the competent intake administrator advised that residential would not be inappropriate. I am proud of my son because as I regularly tested him with at home drug tests for THC sending specimens to the lab, I saw the ng/lt dropping. My instincts tell me although not confirmed with a hard negative he is clean as he is on my lockdown 24/7 basis. Having been directed to the treatment center's outpatient facility an assessment occur yesterday. It delivered an inconclusive dip sample for THC, but much to my XXXXXXX the presence of Benzos. Having said that, I did find it odd that never before last week did he ever ask a question about Xanax or Benzos.

I am a seasoned business man and public speaker. I have delivered many a message entitled "perception is stronger than the truth". Because of past history I immediate perceived that Pot was in fact the gateway drug to Benzos. But my current role is to save his life and also be the one guy that loves him and who he can depend on thick or thin. I am sorry to say his mother is a serial acholic and bipolar and if you were to see them next to one another you would agree he has her DNA.

With the above background history my questions are simple. While I can find false positives occurring from Zantac, they deliver in the categories of amphetamines and THC only. I can't find the simple answer about the pharmacology of the above-mentioned drugs as creating a Benzo false positive. After working so hard to get clean from THC I believe his current drug formulas can easily deliver an inconclusive result on THC. However, there has never been a use of Benzos and my heart says there are false positives going on, but can only find that Zantac and Nexium do produce false positives but only THC and amphetamines. The Celexia can create a meth false positive (anti-depressant i.e.: SRRI inhibitor) but I need to prove him innocent on Benzos. I have broken down the pharmacology of each drug he takes and cannot find the compounds leading me back to a false positive for Benzos, Help!

Brief Answer:
It can lead to false positive results but would not necessarily do so

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

Zantac (ranitidine) has been shown to cause false-positive results for amphetamines but not really benzodiazepines or benzos. Same about Nexium (esomeprazole). Celexa (citalopram) can give rise to false positive results for benzodiazepines but it is not mandatory that taking Celexa (citalopram) would make him test positive for benzodiazepines. I would insist you to get him tested. In case the result is positive (falsely), we can see what can be done about it.

Feel free to write back.
