Can Anxiety Cause Dry Mouth?

default
Posted on Mon, 24 Oct 2016
Question: When I try to sleep, after a few minutes my throat feels like it's closing up and I have to sit up and breathe for a few seconds then I lie down again. The same thing happens when I lie down again and I keep repeating the same process until I'm so exhausted from sitting up and adjusting myself that I fall right asleep. Sometimes during this my mouth goes dry too. Some nights it is less severe than others or I feel completely fine. Its been going on for about 5 months but I never told my doctor, hoping it would just go away. For the last 5 days I've unable to sleep until 6 or 7am because of it. Do I need to go to a walk-in clinic right away or schedule an appointment with my doctor?

Brief Answer:
Schedule an appointment with your doctor. This is probably anxiety related.

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about this experience that you have reported. This is so suggestive of anxiety related disorder. I am not sure of why this is happening but guess you have some fears or unpleasant memories sleeping. This actually prevents you from sleeping. Remember nothing would happen and that's why you still get to sleep when you get exhausted and nothing actually happens to you.

I will suggest you take a tablet of clonazeoam just before going to sleep. This will help with your anxiety. Unfortunately, this requires a doctor's script. Get a regular appointment with your doctor and discuss this in further details with him and also get a script for the proposed drug.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.
