Can An Infection Cause Liver Enzymes To Raise Temporarily?

default
Posted on Mon, 2 Feb 2015
Question: My husband is beginning treatment for a severe sinus infection (Augmentin). He has had a fever for over a week. His lab results show elevated liver enzymes. Dr. says this could be from the infection but wants to do an upper quadrant ultrasound to rule out anything more serious. Can an infection cause liver enzymes to rise temporarily?

Brief Answer:
Get Ultrasound done.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome To HCM. I am Dr Anshul Varshney.
I understand your concern.
Yes infections can transiently raise the liver enzymes.
But we should always rule out other causes of fever with deranged liver enzymes like Viral Hepatitis, Liver abscess.
I would advise you to get his Ultrasound Upper Abdomen done. Along with it you should also get his Hepatitis B and C tested.
Treatment would depend on the cause.
I hope it helps.
If you have any further query, please ask me.
