Can A Raw Skin Lesion Be Related To Alcohol Abuse?
Question: Q: My 35 year old stepson has undiagnosed skin lesion(s). His shoulder was raw and there were things like tiny elbow macaroni imbedded in the raw flesh (not moving). Your thoughts? Any possible relationship to gout/alcohol abuse? He doesn't remember what happened, admits he had passed out.

Brief Answer:
Regarding myiasis
Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Wound myiasis is an infestation and occurs when fly larvae (within the arthropod order Diptera) infest open wounds. The larvae feed on to the host's tissue. Predisposing factors include poor hygiene, advanced or very young age, psychiatric illness, alcoholism, diabetes and physical disabilities.
Treatment of myiasis involves occlusion and manual removal of larvae. Mineral oil is commonly used for occlusion which either kills the larvae or causes them to be easily removed.
