Brief Answer:
Only Trimethoprim, No. Prednisolone best avoided in acute stage.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. Trimethoprim alone is not the ideal antibiotic to treat tonsillitis, however in combination with sulphamethoxazole, it may be used.

2. There are many antibiotics such as the penicillin group and the macrolide group which are far superior now.

3. It is better to take these medications under the supervision of a doctor as there are many side effects possible.

4. Other supportive medication for pain and inflammation, medicated gargles, bland diet, hydration and rest are equally important while treating tonsillitis.

5. Prednisolone may flare up an acute infection and the decision the add a steroid should only be made by your doctor.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Regards.
