Can Razadyne Be Taken Safely By Someone With Dementia?

default
Posted on Wed, 2 Nov 2016
Question: Hello, I have been prescribed Razadyne (also called Galartamine) Looking for side effects of
either or. Prescribed for fact that my parents both were dementive at time of their death. I had
some tests done - a bit incognitive problem. However, I get terrible side effects from meds plus I
noticed these meds are extremely expensive. I have suffered from terrible vertigo since May,
along with a heart condition (possibly) and going to pain management every couple weeks for
discs C-3 and C-4 rubbing on a nerve. I was given Aricept on 9/06 and took it until 9/21 - I swore I was
dying so the dr. took me off it and prescribed the above. I had 11 of the 12 symptoms and lost 14 lbs
during this time. HELP. Thanks, XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Read below

Detailed Answer:
I read your question carefully and I understand your concern.

Both Razadyne and Aricept belong to the same class, for that reason they have similar side effects profile, so the potential for the same side effects you had with Aricept exists with Razadyne as well. It would have been useful if you specified the side effects that you experienced with Aricept. That is because if they were related to the digestive system (most common side effects) perhaps another drug of the same category which is in the form of a transdermal patch (called Rivastigmine or Exelon) may avoid those side effects. As for the price unfortunately all the drugs used for dementia are expensive.

If that doesn't work then you can discuss with your doctor the use of another class of medication used for cognitive impairment such as Memantine.

I remain at your disposal for other questions.
