Can Nyquil And Adderall Be Taken Together?

Posted on Wed, 22 Feb 2017
Question: Hi my names XXXX I am 68 and I have ADD/ADHD.

Please forgive me for an OCD moment to exclaim my overwhelming, passionate situation. I hope to talk with a mental health professional about some over the counter medicines that have upset my balanced life with prescription mental ihealth medications. I have lived a relatively balanced life with several combinations of medications for over 40 years. You may stop reading now and leave the rest of this potentially chat session with one of your professionals. I would prefer email or a phone call but ....
I have experienced a lot of imbalances during more than a week on over the counter congestion relief . I tried to get an appointment with my doctors but it may take many days ... hence this attempt to, at a minimum, find relief from a cold or virus that was being relieved with Nyquil and Metamucil. I was frustrated with concern from my family that I needed to adjust my mental health medicine very soon. However, just as I was going get urgent help, my wife read that Nyquil should not be taken by people on Adderall and the unbalanced symptoms I have can happen.
So, I stopped and am experiencing a more balanced condition.
I take a generic version of Adderall and Lamotrigine. I have been balanced with variations on this combination for several years.

Brief Answer:
Consultation

Detailed Answer:
Hello, and thanks for your question.

Nyquil contains the stimulant dextromethorphan which is used for congestion. This absolutely should not be mixed with Adderall, because this doubles up on stimulants and can cause symptoms of unbalance. As long as you avoid Nyquil, you should be okay.
