default
Posted on Fri, 14 Jul 2023
Question: If i was diagnosis with hypothyroidism and the meds that were given to me was Methimazole 5mg. Is'nt that for hyperthyroidism? I was at my doctor on 03/24/18 and he checked my blood levels and the TSH came back normal. But he also said that I have hypothyroidism. When doing my own research because of schooling which i do attend for HIT. I went to webmd and found that there are different meds for the hypo and hyper. I have been taking this med now for over a year and now i am feeling some of the side affects no appetite severe headache extreme fatigue. I also noticed that I have blood in my urine every time I visit him. And I had to tell him because he always say your urine came back with blood in it so here are some antibiotics for a UTI. I really don't know what I should do next I called my doctor today and spoke with the assisant which she said that she would talk to the Dr. and get back with me today if not tomorrow. But no answer ofcourse not.

Brief Answer:

Methimazole is for hyperthyroidism

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

Methimazole is used to treat overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism).

Fatigue is a sign of hypothyroidism. This maybe a result of lowered thyroid hormones due to methimazole. What was thyroid profile when you started Methimazole?

Bleeding is a side effect of Methimazole and must be investigated to find a specific cause.

Complete urine examination is a must. Complete blood count including platelet count should also be done.

Kindly upload the reports of thyroid and any other reports for me to view. Antibiotics should be taken after the tests are done.

You need to change doctor. Prefer endocrinologist or internal medicine specialist.

If you don't get appointment with a specialist, then go to urgent care center or even emergency room for further evaluation.

Hope I have answered your query.

Take care
