Can Invokana And Metformin Be Taken Together?

default
Posted on Thu, 12 Mar 2015
Question: I am taking Metformin 1000mg per day. I normally take 500mg with breakfast and 500mg at dinner. My Doctor prescribed Invokana 300mg to be taken once daily. She recommends that I take the Invokana with breakfast, a Metformin at lunch and the last Metformin with dinner. Can Invokana and Metformin be taken together or should I space it out. My job doesn't always allow me a time for breakfast and lunch.

Brief Answer:
Better you take it separately.

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Greeting from Dr. Divakara.P
First of all thanks for choosing Healthcaremagic for posting your query.

See there is no drug to drug interaction with Invokana and Metformin (nothing significant). But both are sugar lowering drugs and if you take both at a time your blood sugars may come down drastically and that may be problematic. It is better not to miss the meals.

I would recommend you take these two medicines separately.

Hope this information was useful to you.
Any clarifications feel free to ask .

Regards.

I appreciate you help. I never was so thirsty since I have started on the Invokana. I had been on 100mg until recently when my Dr. changed it to 300mg. I am thirsty constantly is that normal. My intake and output seem to be equal.

Brief Answer:
It's side effect of Invokana

Detailed Answer:
HI

Invokana increases the urine output , means it makes you pass more urine and hence you feel very thirsty.

Excessive thirst is a common side effect of Invokana but nothing to worry. It shall wear off with continued usage.

Hope this information was useful to you.
