Posted on Fri, 19 May 2017
Question: Hi, Today I was kissed on the top of my head (on my hair). I am worried because the person that kissed me has hsv 1. She did not have an active cold sores and has not had one in many years but I am afraid that because I touched my hair XXXXXXX 3 minutes later with my hand it has been transmitted to my hand. Or if I take a shower it will travel to my face or body. Is thwt possible?

Brief Answer:
There is no risk of herpes

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thank you for writing to us

I am dr.kakkar (dermatologist). I have gone through your query and I have noted your concern.

Herpes virus does not penetrate intact skin so there is no risk of transmission to your hands. Secondly a dry kiss is unlikely to transmit any virus. Moreover this virus cannot survive outside body for more than a few seconds and dries quickly on drying.

What if she had licked her lips then kiss my head? Will I be okay to take a shower without the fear that it will rinse down my body from my hair? Also what if my hair touched clothing after being kissed on the head? Does it transmit to clothes?

Hello, am I at risk for hsv if I was kissed on top of my head (on my hair) if I were to take a shower? Is it possible to get hsv if I washed my hair and when rinsing got into my eyes or face?

Brief Answer:
You are safe

Detailed Answer:
Hello.

You are not at all at risk. Hsv does not transmit through fomites like water, clothes or hands. The virus does not survive outside the body for anytime at all so you should not worry. Moreover there were no active cold sores when you were kissed so you should feel safe.
