Can HIV Be Transmitted Through Tools Used For Manicure?

default
Posted on Mon, 29 Dec 2014
Question: I was getting a manicure & was cut by the tools. The tools were clean & sterile. However the manicurist touched my cut with her bare hand and even pressed on it. I did not see if the manicurist had any open bleeding cuts. If she did, am I at risk for infection? If our cuts came into contact?

Brief Answer:
The risk of HIV for you is almost nil

Detailed Answer:
Hi, welcome to HCM.
Thanks for posting your query.

The risk of HIV transmission through the way you explained is almost nil. HIV can not survive outside the body for not more than few seconds. It can not be viable out of body fluids once it gets dried. Such situation can happen to all health care providers, family care providers for HOV positive people and care takers of HIV children homes. All of them are remaining HIV free in spite of their regular exposures.
Even if the manicurist had bleeding wound and had touched your cut, then also your risk is almost negligible and not to get anxious.

So you do not think I need to be tested? She also touched under my finger nail. Is this an area for transmission? I do not know if anywhere under my finger nail was open or had a wound.

My cut was bleeding. If the manicurist was bleeding and her cut pressed into my cut is this a risk?

I have very dry cracked skin on my hands.

Brief Answer:
HIV Risk is negligible. Negative HIV test relieve the tension

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome back.
Once again I assure your risk for HIV is almost nil even if your nail bed was handled by that manicurist.
Regarding testing for HIV, there is nothing wrong in getting tested for HIV. A negative test assures you with extra surety that you are free from HIV and relieves your mental tension. Otherwise it is usual for anybody to attribute any illness in future to HIV, keeping the mental disturbance with the possibility of HIV.
