Can Cpap Full Face Mask Cause Facial Wrinkles?

default
Posted on Thu, 2 Nov 2017
Question: I have been wearing a cpap full face mask for two years now. I have noticeable facial wrinkling on both sides of my face where the mask sits. I am 53 and have had only minor wrinkles prior. These are not indentations or temporary wrinkles. Is this normal? How can I remedy this?

Brief Answer:
Remedy for wrinkles on face

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thank you for writing to us.

I am Dr. Kakkar (Dermatologist). I have gone through your query and I have noted your concern.

A CPAP mask could not possibly be a reason for your face wrinkles. Perhaps the wrinkles are a result of normal chronological ageing and photoageing.
I suggest that you use a broad spectrum sunscreen throughout the day. Reapply every 2-3 hours, specially when outdoors. Using a sunscreen regularly would reduce further photodamage and photoageing
Specifically for the wrinkles you can consider various measures, commonly like botox (botulinum toxin), dermal fillers (commonly hyaluronic acid fillers) and sessions of radiofrequency skin tightening etc which are non invasive.
Invasive measures for an ageing face are commonly like CO2 laser resurfacing, medium depth to deep chemical peels.
The goal of some or most of these antiageing measures is to induce synthesis of new collagen so as to reduce or eliminate the wrinkles.

Thank you for your reply. Perhaps more accurately I should have said accelerate existing wrinkles, not cause them. The CPAP full facial mask is very drying and the constant friction of the silicone cushion on the same spot nightly seems wearing to the skin. I know that hyperpigmention has formed in areas where the strap marks from the headgear are. Anyway, I am aware of current treatments. Thank you for the suggestions and options.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Yoi may as well use a moisturizer for your skin, twice daily. It would help the dryness and calm the skin.
