Can CTE With Encephalomalacia Cause Mental Abnormalities?

default
Posted on Thu, 18 Sep 2014
Question: Can an individual with CTE with encephalomalacia present with mental abnormalities potentially including paranoid schizophrenia? My son was involved in an MVA 25 years ago. He now has paranoid schizophrenia. Just wondering if the CTE could be some of the cause of his illness.

Brief Answer:
it could be possible

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX XXXXXXX

Yes, an individual with CTE with encephalomalacia can present with mental abnormalities such as paranoid schizophrenia. Although, not directly related, repeated and Chronic CTE can lead to a person to have paranoid delusions.

A case study done on reported chronic traumatic encephalopathy exposure, clinical descriptions, and cognitive findings describes the same.

Hence, this could be some of the cause of his illness.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

His injury occurred 25 years ago. His paranoid schizophrenia symptoms have become progressively worse especially over the past 2 years. Could the progression be partly due in part to the injuries?

Thank you for your responses. He is currently in jail awaiting transfer to Whitfield State Hospital in Mississippi. I just hope when he arrives there he will receive medical help from a neurologist and psychiatrist. It hurts to see him in the situation he is in being in jail. He quits taking his meds and progresses down hill. There is such a stigmata associated with mental illness.

Brief Answer:
sorry about the same

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

I am sorry about the entire situation. Hopefully when he gets to the Whitfield State Hospital in Mississippi, he should get the right support and treatment.

Please make him understand that he needs to take the meds to prevent recurrences of the delusions.

I understand the stigmata, and it is sad to hear this.

Take care!
