Can Atacand Be Abruptly Discontinued?

Question: I had a hip replacement surgery taking Tylenol 3 and Hydromorphone 2 to 4 mg few times a day. I had severe Calf pains I stopped taking Atacand 8mg. my leg pain went away it is dangerous to stop taking atacand or should I start taking half dose slowly my blood pressure is normal at the moment. I have stopped Atacand for 3 days. Your suggestions please.

You can monitor your blood pressure to determine if the medication needs to be restarted but this should be discussed with your doctor.

According to the newest JNC guidelines ( one of the high blood pressure guidelines in the US), the goal for blood pressure is persons over age 60 is less than 150/90.
If there is kidney failure or diabetes then the goal is less than this.

If the person can get readings lower than this then that is also fine, once there are no symptoms of low blood pressure.

If you have readings at or below 150/90 consistently, you may discontinue the medication for now.
