Can Amikacin Shots Cause Permanent Damage To The Ears?

Question: I have been suffering from uti since 4 months tried every antibiotic cipro levofloxacin. Martifur... But no one is affecting..my ultrasound is normal...this tym my infection has gone to kidneys shivering fever lower back pain. Now my doctor has prescribed amikacin injection .for 5 days....500 ml 2 times and 1 have taken amikacin injection for 1 day and my ears are hearting so badly .. And i feel pressure in ears. Doctor said that some people feel reducd hearing but this is temporary once u complete 5 days course your hearing becomes normal again... But in internet i have studied that i can damage your ears permanently...... So should i continue or not.. And is hearing is temporary

Thanks for your query ,based on the facts that you have posted it appears that you have been advised to take Inj Amikacin twice daily for kidney infection .

I shall be happy if you can post me few more details to help me in making comments on your problem.
1)Was your renal function tests done before starting Amikacin ?
2) Have you done urine culture to identify the organisms causing infection and their sensitivity pattern?

Akikacin is known to have toxic effects on 8th Cranial nerve and Cochliar apparatus of the ear resulting into severe damage and deafness .

Please stop taking Amikacin immediately .

Get your routine urine test and urine culture done to identify the organisms causing this infection and antibiotics to which they are sensitive to.

Please take broad spectrum antibiotics like Cefotaxime along with urinary antiseptic like Nitrofurantoin twice daily and urine alkalizer thrice daily .Later on switch on to appropriate antibiotics as per culture report.

Get the prescription of medicines from your family Physician.

Ensure to drink more water .To keep your urine dilute This will help to control dysuria.

Now i have done my culture.. I have problem with all floroauineoles.... And i m resistant to cefixime group.... I have been taking nitrofurontoin not much reilief... Is there any other injection like monocef etc which i can take

Yes my renal function was done..... Cretnine -1 uric acid-4 urea -20 ....... Amykacin was well affecting..... I have reduced my shivering by 1 injection only....... Can there be any medine which can be taken with amikacin which can save my ears...... Or else what can i do.... Any other injection something plz tell me i feel like dying......

Taking any other drug will not help to reduce the toxicity of Amikacin .

Please post your culture report so that I can suggest appropriate antibiotic as per culture report else consult your family physician to switch over to appropriate antibiotic .

Actually i have done my culture test 3 months ago then the bacteria was ecoli and sensitivity was cexime grp resistant..... Now infection shows up in routine but culture is negetive... Doctor says that so sensitivity ia not same as previous..... So we have to assume ..... I want to ask that is monocef injection is safe for me can monocef good injection????? Will it suite to me without testing sensitivity as culutre is not showinh up....... But routine is pus cells-8-10 urine protien +ve..... Leucocyte etarase-+ve..... Tlc 10300

I have problem of urinating frequently and and less urine the flow is weak.... From 2 years doctors done ultrasound they said normal ultrasound... Now urine is not passing it is retenting..... I go to bathroom i feel like urinating but urine is not coming although my cretnine us normal i have been facing very much pain in lower back lower abdomen upper back...... So is it possible that i have urithraal sticture... Urine is not passing so i have infection.....wht to do .... I feel lyk suffocating from inside..... I think that once urine flows properly my infection will gone... Plz tell.....

I dont have buring in urine.....urine is not coming and pain is in lower back and upper back.... Lower abdomen........ So is it infection that urine is not coming or urithral sticture which is causing infection....

And i thing i want to ask that today i had gone to my urologist he said that... Take 1 grm monocef injection for 3 days twice a day.... I want to know if i am resistant to cefixime.......... Which had showed up in last culture 3 months ago..... Then monocef injection will work or not....... Or monocef injection has another salt.... Or it works on everbody plz tell its urgent plz....only antibiotic which suits me is nitofurontoin..... Has minor side effects.. When i take it gives some relief and urine is not passing so in sometime pain starts again..... Plz tell me now would i be on monocef injection or .......what to do... Utine is not passing

Cefixime and Monosafe (Ceftriaxone ) belong to same group of drugs called Cephalosporine .

Bacteria always change their sensitivity pattern hence though they were resistant to Cefixime 3 months back may not be true today,Hence I would still suggest you to repeat your urine culture .

In the mean while you can continue with Monosafe for three days and change over to appropriate antibiotic as per culture report .

The difficulty in passing urine seems to be due to anxiety and not due to stricture as stricture of the urethra is very very rare to occur in females .

The pain in abdomen is mostly due to kidney infection .
