Question: I had botox injections for migraines on Thursday. Been getting them for a few years. The next day, I woke up feeling extremely tired, and nausea. Then I developed a migraine, chills, stuffy nose. I just spoke to my dr and he said It's not from the botox, it's viral! How can I tell if it's viral or botox?

Brief Answer:
Difference of viral infection and side effects of Botox explained below.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

It is very difficult to precisely confirm the cause of your symptoms. Some of the side effects of Botox injection are very similar to flu symptoms.

There are some examinations that can be done to confirm the presence of viruses on the system. Immunofluorescence or immunoperoxidase tests are commonly used to detect for viral infections.

They are done by taking a blood test. Another difference is that the symptoms of a viral infection last for a few days. The side effects of Botox injection can last for weeks.

Meanwhile, some advice about the treatment are:
- Use anti-inflammatory medications such as Ibuprofen 400 mg three times a day
- Drink liquids
- Rest

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
