Are Extra Boosters Of TT Harmful For A Child Suffering From Diphteria?

default
Posted on Tue, 19 Apr 2016
Question: Hello, my 7 yrs old daughter has already been given three shots of the tetanus vaccine.
As the monovalent Diphteria is no longer available, she will need to get the Td.
I'm very worried it won't be good for her to get two extra boosters of TT. Are there many risks? Any other option to get her immunized for Diphteria? Thank you very much!

No risks. Can go forward.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

Let me assure you that the extra boosters of TT will not cause any harm and you can feel free to get her vaccinated with Td. You need not look for other options.

Thank you very much for your prompt reply. She has had three shots (the last one last October) and she is really allergic.
That's why I'm really worried about her getting three more. When could I start with the vaccination, meaning how long shall I wait after the October shots?
On top of that would the Td be a good option also for her two year old sister? I'd rather avoid the DT as it contains a small amount of Thimerosal (0,01%).
Thanks again

Brief Answer:
Schedule mentioned

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back.

The course of DPT (Diphtheria, Pertussis and Tetanus Toxoid) is a total of 5 doses; Three primary doses at 6, 10, 14 weeks and two booster doses at 16-24 months and 5 years of age. The latter ones are often replaced by DT or Td. This is followed by TT (Tetanus Toxoid) 2 doses at 10 years and 16 years of age. You can calculate the dose timings from the above information.

Let me know if I could help further.
