16 Weeks Pregnant. Is Air Travel Safe During This Period?

default
Posted on Fri, 7 Jun 2013
Question: Hello Dr Soumen Patra,

As discussed in my earlier query, My wife is 16 weeks pregnant this week & planning to travel to India for 2 week to attend a wedding during last week of May (traveling to india in 18th week & back to US on 21st week) -->
flight1 --> 16hrs & flight2 --> 4hrs duration

Q1) She is travelling to & fro in less than 23 weeks? My OBGYN says it should be fine & per airlines just like you mentioned in my earlier query its okay to travel till 30 weeks ? I am assuming travel will be safe
Q2) I read online that Compression Socks will help during flight travel ? Do you advise on the compression socks ? Is there any other thing or clothing's or devices like this which can help to have a smooth flight travel ?
Q3) Do i need to take any vaccinations ? Is it safe to have any vaccination or do you advise any ?
Q4) I read online that she can take typhoid Vaccine to prevent -- Is it safe during pregnancy ?
Q5) Is it advisable to send in Business Class or Economy ? i know its expensive but i am trying to make sure what is good for her at this time ?

Thanks

Hello,

Thanks for writing to us. Followings are my comments as per your queries:

1) Traveling in flight is quite safe during pregnancy period up to 32 weeks. Your OBGYN also permits that. So you can make a trip to India.

2) Yes, she can use compression socks to avoid venous thrombosis (DVT) during long time travel. She must take a kit bag with emergency medicines (that I have mentioned earlier), wear loose fitting comfortable dress including innerwear, use moisturizer cream to avoid skin dryness, drink water timely to stay hydrated etc. These can help to travel flight smoothly.

3) Some infections can harm you and your baby during pregnancy. That's why vaccinations are so important to protect your body from infection. Flu vaccine & Tdap or DPT vaccine are recommended during pregnancy period. Please consult with your healthcare provider.

4) Typhoid vaccine is contraindicated during pregnancy and it should not be taken as it is harmful to developing baby.

5) Business class is mostly safe & comfortable than usual standard coach in case of long journey. Though it is more expensive, you can travel without any tension.

Hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help.
