Stay away from fried foods, concentrated sweets (sugary mints and candies, soda), and high fatty foods (mcdonalds, wendys, arby's etc). And stay away from foods high in cholesterol (fatty red meat, fast food) Starbucks is also very high in cholesterol and has a lot of concentrated sweets. Try to increase your daily consumption of fruits and vegetables. I know you said u dont want to take medicine, but what about herbal supplements that u can buy over the counter? Enteric coated Garlic tablets worked for me. I took one before each meal for a few weeks, and I noticed a decrease when I went back to my doctors. And they don't leave that garlic taste in your mouth since they have a special coating on them that keep them from dissolving too quickly.
