What Causes Soreness In Tongue With Red Spots Of Soft Palate?

hi, I ve been diagnosed with trigeminal neuralgia. Neurologist gave me lyrica which helped with the head, teeth and jaw pain, it did nothing for the problems I ve been having with my toungue, feels swollen and very sore, at my next appointment she addded deprevix and xanax, saying that the problems with my toungue is probably psychosomatic, I ve been taking those pils for about 50 days now and I still have a sore toungue, feels sore/ tired when I speak for extended periods (more than a few minutes) I also get this burning feeling at the back on the toungue, for the past 30 days or so I ve noticed red spots on the soft palate, they seem to come and go at will. About the same time as my neuralgi started my neck also started to swell at the right side, the bones in the neck are very sore, all this said I ve done MRI of the head and a gastroskopi. MRI was clear and the stomach showed gastritida, but nothing serious. I m female 40 years old, in good shape, so please tell me, am I being hysterical about feeling my toungue and neck and by worrying about the red spots?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted the history trigeminal neuralgia treated and getting results with Lyrica but the soreness in tongue remains, tired on speaking for a few minutes, red spots on soft palate that come and go and swelling on right side of neck. Lyrica is pregabalin and we have to whether the other symptoms and signs that you have mentioned are due to Pregaballn or not and if present then may need to shift to another medicines like Amitriptyline, Tegrital or so.

Other reasons can be allergy to something in foods or fluids, the preservatives and so on. I would suggest you to discuss about oral steroids in short tapering courses if you are not a diabetic and should help you. Also, watch for hypertension and it is always advisable to have MRI for Trigeminal nerves as sometimes a vascular loop around the nerve can be found and can be treated by surgery by expert surgeon.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
