Hi, Thanks for writing in. Paraneoplastic syndrome is an autoimmune mediated reaction to a tumor in the body. The tumor is usually malignant but in rare cases can also be a benign one. What happens is that the autoimmune system is triggered and there is a cascade of chemicals in the system which cause various symptoms that are identified with paraneoplastic syndromes. She might be requiring a long course of steroids which will be reduced slowly. There is a chance of developing symptoms of steroid induced Cushings syndrome. The symptoms are 1. weight gain, obesity, fatty deposits, especially in the face (round moon face), between the shoulders, the upper back, and midsection 2. stretch marks on the breasts, arms, abdomen, and thighs 3. thinning skin that bruises easily 4. cuts, insect bites, and infections that are slow to heal 5. acne 6. fatigue, muscle weakness 7. glucose intolerance 8. increased thirst, increased urination 9. bone loss 10. high blood pressure 11. headache 12. cognitive dysfunction, anxiety, irritability, depression Please have consultation with her doctors if her side effects increase and they will manage the steroid dose.
