What Causes Pain In The Bone Of The Eye Socket?

I am a 73 year old in excellent health. My only medication is Restasis for dry eye. Several times per week for the past 3 months, I get a pretty severe pain above my left eye...bone behind the eyebrow. It eases off and on but remains fairly constant for about 20 minutes or so. This is in the bone area alone...not involving the lid or the eye. Any ideas?

Hi,

The upper orbital socket has a very small indent in it. if you push on the eyebrow, you can usually feel it. A nerve called the supraorbital nerve comes out and provides sensation to the eyebrow region and part of the forehead. Irritation of the nerve is generally described by patients as bone pain in the upper eye socket or lower forehead. Many things can cause this nerve to get irritated and produce pain.

I don't think the Restasis or having dry eyes is causing any issues with this. The only thing I can recommend to be honest is if it gets very uncomfortable, applying an ice pack directly to this areas does seem to reduce the discomfort and often patients even say that applying direct pressure to the nerve site itself reduces pain rather quickly.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
