What Causes Numbness In My Arms?

I am a heavy drinker, on high blood pressure meds, I work in a high stress job, am overweight. I have recently experienced numbness and pain in my left are throughout the day and night, and as night both arms are numb. I should stop drinking, lose weight, and exercise. Should the numbness stop once I stop drinking, and lose weight? If not how serious could this be?
