I will be 37 weeks pregnant monday, I get heartburn pretty bad sometime and it has been making me throw up. every time I eat i usually throw up. latley near the end of throwing up its a dark red color. and my throat start burning really bad. am i puking up blood.? im really worried about this
I understand your concern and will do my best to answer your question and put your mind at ease. Heartburn or GERD (gastroesophogeal reflux disease) is very common during pregnancy. The baby is getting bigger and putting pressure on the stomach and the baby releases hormones that loosen the lower esophageal sphincter. It can certainly be very annoying but is usually quite harmless for you and the baby and goes away soon after the baby is born. A small amount of blood can happen without implying anything dangerous. You should let your doctor or midwife know, but peptic ulcers and esophageal tears are very uncommon in pregnancy. To alleviate the symptoms try the following: - avoid nicotine, caffeine, foods that are spicy or acidic (tomatoes, orange juice etc.), peppermints or chocolates - don't lie down after meals (gravity lets the acid climb into your throat) - try more frequent smaller meals - try an antacid (Tums, roll-aids) - Pepcid and Zantac are safe as well I hope that helps and best of wishes for the pregnancy and delivery
