What Are Risks Involved During Pregnancy In Person Having Cauda Equina Syndrome?

I prolapsed a disc 3 years ago which although was operated on to remove the protusion, it left me with Cauda Equina Syndrome (no feeling in the back of my left thigh and saddle area, but thankfully no loss of organ control). Now however I think I may be pregnant, and wondered if there any further risks which I may need to be aware before or during pregnancy? Many thanks

Hello, and I hope I can help you today.

Women with spinal cord problems, even with paralysis, can successfully become pregnant and have normal vaginal deliveries, as long as they can lie on their back with their legs open. As long as you have normal mobility, your cauda equina syndrome should not affect your labor and delivery.

The only issue may be your ability to have epidural or spinal analgesia during labor. You should consult with an anesthesiologist if you plan to get an epidural for labor as the ability to place the catheter may be affected by your disk surgery.

I hope I was able to answer your question and best wishes for the pregnancy

Sincerely, Dr. Brown
