Unsecured Sex, Sore Throat, Cough, Night Sweats. Symptoms Of HIV?

I've been going through a lot of mental and emotional instability lately and hooked up with a guy I did not know at all last Friday (Sept 6). Horrible guy and I basically consented to sex because he wouldn't lay off... Anyway I told him to wear a condom and he did, but I'm not sure if he took it off in the middle of intercourse. He kept holding my arm up above my head, and after he finished he quickly threw a blanket on me... I tossed the blanket off and got up and asked (just to make sure, even though I saw the condom on him before he inserted himself) if he wore a condom. He said "nah." I freaked out and he said "I did wear it, sorry I don't want to freak you out." I asked where it was and he said "under the blanket." I looked and there was a condom, but it didn't look like anything was in it.... I didn't seem him take the condom off after sex either. anyway, we don't talk anymore. He hasn't contacted me. I recently found his number again and have been texting about the incident and his status but he isn't replying...

Anyway for the past 4-5 days I've been experiencing a bad sore throat, occasional cough, night sweats that cause my tank top to be soaked, and some mild muscle aches. I know these are early symptoms of HIV. I'm so scared and worried about this. I can't believe I have to freak out over this for 3 MONTHS before test results will be accurate. I don't know what to do!!! I just keep thinking that this guy infected me on purpose. Please help!!!!

Hello dear,
First of all, HIV can not be diagnosed only on the basis of certain symptoms.
The clinical features as mentioned in your post can also be due to common cold.

However, if you are concerned due to unsecured intercourse as well as the unknown status of your partner, you can get certain tests done like p24 assay or PCR for HIV, which becomes positive within a week and are almost 100 % sensitive.
Even the presence of a single virus in the body can be detected by PCR.
So, if this test comes negative, you can be sure that you are safe.

Wishing you a good health.
Take care.

Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about what you experienced and the heightened concern your symptoms symptoms have caused you.

From the information you have provided, it is unlikely that the symptoms you are experiencing at this time are caused by an acute HIV infection. The interval between exposure and onset of symptoms is too short to make this real. It usually takes 3-6weeks before any acute symptoms related to infection show up.

Your symptoms are suggestive of pharyngitis or infectious mononucleosis or a flu. I will like you to get consulted and investigated for these symptoms rather than just associating them to HIV.

Your exposure at worst is real. You may not need to stay for 3months before getting a reliable test to exclude or confirm that you were contaminated if you can pay for the more expensive PCR test that looks for viral particles rather than antibodies in the persons system. Ask your doctor about the possibility of doing this.

I hope this helps you. Please, in live, always try to put your interest first. You wouldn't consent for intercourse simply because the other person was pressing hard for. Please, reconsider this next time.

I hope you find this helpful. I wish you the best of possible outcomes.
Tanks fo rthis opportunity to address your concerns. If you should have any further questions, revert to me and I would gladly address them.
