Terrible Vaginal Pain Whenever I Go Swimming. Why ?
Hi doctor I am an 18 year old female, and for the last three years, each time I would go swimming, I would end up with terrible vagina pain. I am a virgin and I am afraid that something might happen to my hymen . Please doctor am I at risk of breaking my hymen if I keep swimming? A frightened girl
My guess is that the pain you are experiencing is not from the vagina, but from the muscles around the vagina that make up the pelvic floor. When the pain from these muscles is associated with vaginal pain, it is sometimes called vaginismus. We most often see patients with this condition in the setting of pain with intercourse, but this could occur in the setting you describe as well.
As far as the hymen goes, the problem that I am describing is of low concern and certainly is harmless to the hymen which is extra skin at the vaginal opening that is not connected to these muscles. You cannot break the hymen without actual vaginal penetration.
I hope this helps and good luck. Dr. Tim
