Hello. In elderly people a common cause of pain and swelling in the knee is osteoarthritis. In young people a common cause of pain and swelling in the knee is an ligament affection (also possible diagnosis in elderly people). It is important to be examined by an orthopedic surgeon. By now,is important to apply local cold and keep the leg elevated.I too treat my patients with Diclofenac 50 mg thrice a day by mouth when there is swelling knee. Please consult your local doctor for a prescription and go to orthopedic surgeon as soon as possible. I wish you good health. (In case the answer would have been useful please indicate this)
