Hi,I am Dr. Alexander H. Sheppe (Psychiatrist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Dear DoctorI am 31 years old and suffering from Erectile Dysfunction. I am married for past 3 yrs and I have not been able to establish sexual relationship with my partner. The symptoms are that I get erection but I cannot maintain it and I lose it before penetration.I am also a patient of schizophrenia and I am undergoing treatment for it for the past 6 years. I am taking "Residon" regularly for past 6 years. However I have tried having sex several times between 2000-now but never succeeded.I was also addicted to Cannabis (Marijuana) for 4-5 years between 2000-2004 and I was a smoker for over 10 years between 1998-2009. I stopped taking marijuana in 2005 and I stopped smoking in 2009.I have seen several doctors in past 3 years and I have tried medicines like tadacip and syldenafil, but those medicines did not help. I also underwent a minor surgery to widen the upper skin of my penis (as I used to feel pain while removing the skin of my penis after erection). Please suggest if I can be treated for this.
Dear service user, Thank you for writing to Healthcaremagic. I understand your issue of erectile dysfunction for last three years. I understand that Residone contains Risperidone drug. It can cause male erectile dysfunction. It may be a significant cause of your problem because you take it for last six years. There are other antipsychotic medicines such as Aripiperazole, Ziprasidone ,Iloperidone and Asenapine which has lowest tendency to cause sexual dysfunction. You can gradually switch over to any one of these alternative medications. Discuss with your psychiatrist. If sexual dysfunction improves within 3 months of stopping your current drug (Residone), then it is the likely cause of it. It is good to listen that you are now free from cannabis and smoking. I congratulate your efforts for remaining free from it. I hope, this will help you. Wish you good health.
