Suggest Treatment For Calf Pain

i am a 48 year old female. I am 5 foot 7, 135 lbs., pretty active I coach volleyball and basketball and teach school. I take medicine for high blood pressure. I have high cholesterol, but do not take medicine for that. About four days ago, the back of my left calf starting hurting in the center back muscle. It then started swelling up and hurting more the next day and for the last two days my ankle has swollen to double the size of my other one. Now it is tingling and feels asleep. The school nurse told me that I probably strained a muscle and to take ibuprophen. It is not helping, should I go to the doctor?

Hello,

I agree with the nurse that the symptoms seem to be related to a strained muscle. I recommend to continue using Ibuprofen to relieve the pain. I also recommend using cold compresses to prevent the inflammation. Magnesium supplements can also be helpful.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Dorina Gurabardhi, General & Family Physician
