Suggest Diet For Typhoid Patient

Respected Doctor,
I am Mahek Patel, 15 years old, 163 cm tall and weigh 64kg. I was admitted in hospital on 2nd September for Typhoid and discharged on 8th September. I am given particular medicines for the same. Doctor told to intake a liquid diet only. I still have pain in my tummy. But i feel low in energy and hungry the whole day because my mother is very impatient, tension taking, very much unnecessary worrying and so very strict and particular about liquid intake. So i am only given Rice Water, Juices and Ice Cream because mother is confused what else to give. So what particular diet shoud i follow which makes me feel healthy and full of energy?

You can take fruit (pomegranate/orange/sweet lime or musambi) juices with added sugar, glucose water, coconut water, buttermilk, vegetable soups, chicken soup etc. Till you are given liquid diet, you will feel hungry and a little low in energy but considering the fact that your digestive system has become weak due to typhoid, you are kindly advised to follow the prescribed diet till your intestines recover enough to tolerate solid foods as you still have stomach ache, right? Hope you understand that your intestines are still recovering and cannot be taxed with solid foods only to worsen the situation. Have liquids at the rate of 150-200 ml/2hrly to meet some of your energy needs.

Make sure utmost care is taken while preparing liquid feeds for you to avoid any contamination. Avoid taking juices from local vendors/shopkeepers owing to poor hygiene standards maintained by them.

Once you are able to tolerate liquid feeds well without any symptoms like diarrhoea, vomiting or abdominal pain, you can gradually begin with semi solid foods like khichdi, well-cooked mashed dal and soft rice and suji or semolina pudding, curd/paneer, banana. For increasing energy, you can add butter/ghee or cream to foods. For soups, you can use cream or butter and corn starch (for thickening) and for extra energy.

Later, you can have the above foods and include starchy foods for increasing your energy intake such as sago or sabudana khichdi, sago kheer/rice kheer/vermicelli kheer/boiled potato with light seasoning, semolina pudding or upma.

Hope this will help you in recovering quickly after illness. Take care.
