Smoker, Coughed Foamy Clear Mucus With Huge Bubbles Leaving Dry Throat. Possible Reason?

I am a smoker, to begin. so, i was falling asleep when i woke up with a coughing attack (which has happened before) however, i coughed up foamy clear mucus that made huge bubbles and left me with a dry throat . i cant seem to clear it out of my throat even when i drink water. could this be because i didn t smoke as much as i usuallyppp do today?
