Should I Fear Depression Or Bipolar Disorder Because Of ADHD And Having Suffered From Postpartum Psychosis?

Hi my name is sue and I was in Timberline Knolls last July 2013. While I think it helped I am yet again finding out that mental health issues never end. I have a wonderful Supporttive husband of 15 years and 3 beautiful healthy children god has blessed me with. We are financially secure and own our own business. While I know all these positive things in my head I feel like I am just not right.

I have ADHD and am on 60 milligrams of Vyvanse once a day. I was diagnosed as a child but was never medicated until I was at Timberline. I was also put on Zoloft 100mg a day and it doesn't help at all. I also take Nexium 40mg per day as well. While I was in Timberline they started me on Lamectil as well but when I got out and went to my Primary he said he didn't believe I needed to continue and took my off that. For some reason I feel that I felt better when I was on Lamectial.

I had serious postpartum pychosis with all 3 of my kids and was in UCLA after my last child 11 years ago.

I have a huge family history of mental health disorders from depression, Bipolar disorder, suicide and addiction problems.

The more and more I read about bipolar disorder the more shockingly it becomes quite clear to me that it's like reading a story of my life. So many highs, lows and in between sand I feel guilty because I have a wonderful life.

I don't mind being on meds that help me but I don't want to be over medicated to the point that the good parts I know I have in me are gone, I hope that makes sense.

Any advice I am at a loss.

Thank you for your time

Sue

Psychiatrist 's  Response
Hello,
Welcome to Healthcare Magic.

From your history and postpartum psychosis episodes, bipolar disorder is more probable diagnosis in your case. Mood swing, severe depressive symptoms and suicide attempts make it more reasonable diagnosis in your case. Family history of bipolar illness increases its chances.

In treatment mood stabilizers like Lamictal under psychiatrist supervision is better option in my opinion.

You can provide more information regarding other associated symptoms with this problem in past to help you better.

Wish you good health and all the best.
