Should I Continue Taking Loperamide Hydrochloride For Chronic Diarrhea?

Hi, I have had chronic diahorrea for sometime now and am taking Loperamide Hydrochloride 2mg capsules. I have had three occasions where my bowels have opened whilst I have been sleeping, the most recent was last night. I am in a new relationship and this was distressing and most embarassing, please have you any idea how I may prevent this happening again. Anne

Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Most of the diarrhea are self limiting until and unless infection is there or it is clinical suggestive of some infection then and then it needed antibiotic else diarrhea can not be checked with medicine (Lopramide ) because it may cause the paralytic ilium which could be dangerous. This condition can be managed tentatively with Tab Metronidazole.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Akhtarhusain Shaikh
