Severe Pain Radiating From Jaw To Ear And To Head. Had A Crown Put On. Using Antibiotics And Analgesics. Treatment?

At the end of July I had a crown put on. No pain before then. Since then severe pain. I take 3200 to 4000 mg of ibuprophen a day to deal with pain. At night I sleep with a bag of frozen veg. to stand the pain. I have been back to the dentist several times. He can't figure out the pain. took a panaramic film and several, several x-rays. He can't figure it out. I had severe pain and had to go to emergency center for pain. They gave me an antibotic, ear drops (antibotic), tremdol, and a steriod. Meds all gone. No change. Still hurts. The pain in my ear seems to be getting worse. There is a bump on the bottom part of my jaw, pain travels up to ear and then into head. This is severe pain. My doc. said he is stumped. I called and made an appt with an ent today. I am only getting a couple hours sleep a night due to the pain. Sometimes I use moist heat--helps some. What do you think.

Hello,

Thanks for writing to us.

The ear and jaw pain post insertion of crown may be due to-Irregular or altered occlusion due to improperly placed crown.

I would advice you to get the crown removed and replaced after correcting the occlusion.

The high points of the crown has to be relieved.

Avoid biting on hard objects as well as application of heavy forces.

Hope this helps.

Welcome to HCM.

Jaw and ear pain after crown placement could be due to various reasons

First of all you haven't mentioned weather your tooth has been root canal treated or not?

Crown preparation sometimes places a lot of stress on a tooth, causing the nerve to become irreversibly inflamed leading to severe pain. Hence the tooth may need root canal treatment.

Also improper occlusal contacts and high points may cause reffered pain..Correction of high points will give relief.

Many a times if the crown is impinging on the surrounding gums i.e overextended crown may also cause pain..Trimming of the borders of the crown could be possibily done in this case

It is advisable that u visit a prosthodontist as physical examination will give confirmed diagnosis.

hope you are satisfied by the response. take care

Hi...welcome to HCM

After going through your query, i would like to know what was the reason for putting on crown on that tooth...was it carious(decayed).

If it was decayed then before placing crown did you underwent root canal treatment for that tooth.

You also mentioned about a lump below the tooth, was it present before the placement of crown or afterwards

The pain you are going through could b because of -
1- High point on the crown which might be leading to traumatic occlusion during eating
2- Incorrect preparation of the tooth on which crown is placed Because of which on biting you are facing pain.

It is advised that you consult your dentist and ask him to reduce the high points on the crown, on doing this your pain would be relived.

An opinion of an E.N.T. can also be helpful

Please avoid eating any thing hard from that side and consult a doctor as soon as possible.

Thank you

Hi,

Thanks for asking the query,

According to your clinical symptoms i suppose that the pain can be due disturbance in occlussion.
I would suggest you to consult the concerned Prosthodontist and get the checkup done take an x-ray done.
If there are presence of any high points it has to be relieved.
If the tooth is not treated for root canal treatment, check for this and if required a root canal treatment has to be performed.

Hope you find this as helpful,

Regards...
