Severe Constipation After Hysterectomy. Stomach Gurgling, Frequent Bowel Movements, High BP. Polyp Found, Have Diverticulitis. Solution?

I am 39 years old. weigh 195lb and am 5'6". I had a hysterectomy in Dec. last year. I became severely constipated/empacted and had to use an enima for relief. About 3 days later my symptoms started. Very gurgly stomach on and off. Frequent soft morning bowel movements. up to 4 by 10am. It is always worse in the morning. I have high blood pressure so I have fought very hard to improve my diet. Now it seems that whole grains, fruits and veggies increase my symptoms. I actually ate a cheeseburger one day and got relief! This is not conducive to a healthier life style!
I have had an endoscopy/ colonoscopy. upper was fine. lower I had an 8mm polyp which was benign. I also have diverticulitus. no problems yet with that. They keep throwing around ibs. Isnt that just a name for we don't know? So frustrating. I have been on probiotics for months. I have had fecal tests with negative results. I have been checked for gluten and wheat intolerance.

Hello!

Thank you for the query.

IBS can be translated as "we dont know" indeed. Some part of IBS is caused by chronic bacterial infection which can give symptoms like yours. That is why it is worth to try Rifaximine treatment for such infection.
Other possible reasons of chronic constipation are medicines (ca-blockers, antidepressants), hypothyroidism. Neither large intestine polyp or diverticles do not cause constipation.

I suggest you to try Rifaximine treatment first. If you do take Ca-blockers for hypertention, consider with your doctor a change to some other medicine. In a meanwhile check your thyroid tests. If nothing will be found and still no relief, abdominal CT with oral contrast (enteroclysis) should be next. It is possible that after hysterectomy, adhesions in the abdominal cavity are disturbing bowel movements.

Hope this will help.
Regards.
