Pregnant, First Ultrasound Showed No Heartbeat. When Will The Heartbeat Likely Appear ?

Hi I am pregnant and the first U/S on 12.07.'13 had the following results -- LMP - 22nd May 2013, GA by LMP - 7 weeks 2 days, Single intrauterine gest sac seen 4-5 weeks, No fetal pole seen, No yolk sac seen. No signs of viability. Impression : Findings are s/o missed abortion.
Since there were no signs of miscarriage the OB asked me to have a U/S after a week (19.07.'13) whose results are as follows: GA by LMP - 8 weeks 2 days, Single intrauterine gest sac seen, Single fetal pole seen, Yolk sac seen, No cardiac activity yet, CRL - 2.8 mm - 5 weeks 6 days, Chorionic rim is globular. Impression : Single 5 weeks 6 days pregnancy.
I have been asked to come next week for an u/s to check whether there is a heartbeat.
Initially when we went for the first u/s there was only a gest sac, but this time there was a gest sac, yolk sac as well as a fetal pole seen. What are the chances to see a heartbeat on the next u/s. Thank you

Hi,

Thanks for writing in.

At 5 weeks 6 days (ultrasound age) heart beat may not be appreciated. Your report mentions visibility of yolk sac and fetal pole. Your doctor is doing the correct thing by asking you to come after one week. The heart forms around 6 weeks and heart beat may be appreciated only after 7 weeks in some patients.

The chances to observe a heart beat are very high in the next ultrasound. It also depends on the machine used by the doctor.

Hope this helps.
