Pregnant. Scan Showed Bilaterally Foetal Renal Pelvicalyceal System Mildly Dilated. Related To Baby's Kidney?
Hi Doctor,
The concern is regarding my sis who is into 5th month of her pregnancy. She went for scan today and was told of "BILATERAL FOETAL RENAL PELVICALYCEAL SYSTEM MILDLY DILATED" She is quite distraught on hearing this as doctor told her that its related to baby's kidney. She is also asked to go for a 4D scan to examine further. Can you please explain what exactly is this and is there anything to worry about?
Hello Thanks for your query. At 21 weeks, dilatation of upto 5 - 9 mm is considered mild pelvicalyceal dilatation. In most cases, mild dilatation resolves as pregnancy advances. in most cases, it is harmless. You need thorough scanning to rule out any renal abnormalities or other anomalies causing such dilatation. A 4 D scan would show that. If the dilatation persists, it is correctible with surgery after birth. Take care.
